I work in economic development, mostly directly assisting manufacturers in marketing, financing, facilities, workforce, etc., out in Montana, a state typically compared to West Virginia on most measures and with much of the same economic base including coal mining, power generation, marginal farming, government jobs, decaying small towns, beauty/history etc.. so the challenges of Grantville before and after RoF really resonate. Plus having a mother from Bavaria who's father was from Cologne makes the German history both Protestant and Catholic very interesting and embarrassingly fresh to me. Business and Art degrees, some MBA — enough not to think much of it.  Mostly small business experience as an owner or employee, no military. 'Nother gun nut/history buff/sci-fi fan/bookaholic/alt-history lover/middle-aged guy so it's nice to blend into the bar so well.
