Saale River at Rudolstadt
Here are some images of the Saale river at Rudolstadt, about 40 kilometers south of Jena. (The Saale runs through Jena also, but it was easier to get good shots of the river at Rudolstadt.)
It's very shallow, much more so than you might think. Mike estimated the depth at the deepest point at six feet, but I think it was probably closer to four feet. Since neither of us had a long enough stick to measure from the center of the bridge, we'll never know.
This is a picture of the Saale valley, coming into Rudolstadt from the north.

This shows part of the central town square in Rudolstadt. A lot of these buildings would have been there in 1632, by the way.

This building, on the opposite side of the square, was erected in 1615.
