rb1) Will Stewart, Eric, Dave and Mike in parking lot across the street from the McDonalds. rb2) Terry, Don (Paula's husband), Paula Goodlett, and Sherry Boatright in front of the only "sit down resterant" in Mannington even now. (yes, yes, there's the greasy spoon in the theatre, and the sandwich shope and a pizza place.) rb3) Dan Robinson ignoring a horse in the show ring at the fairgrounds. rb4) the fairgrounds are not flat... that said, behind the show ring, the "booths", then a playground, then the city pool, then the pop-warner pee wee football field, then a 1930's WPA project civic center which is a refuge center in the book. The "thuringian gardens" must have been set up either in this show ring, or on the pee wee football field..... since they were "across from the pool." rb5) stuck the lens out a bit towards the pool. note that the bottom floor of the community gym there is OPEN, not closed in... tho it could be. Gym floor above is VERY sold. 12" rafters on 12 inch centers, with steel I beams as headers... rb6) Cass, (Butch's wife) does NOT ignore the horse. rb7) sanitation center at fairgrounds (note captions... womans and men's showers on the right....) rb8) note the blue steel bridge across the creek from the fairgrounds to the pool and thence to the pee wee football field... rb9) another view of that creek. rb10 morecreek, and a second show ring at the fairgrounds. rb11 completing our rotation to the right, that's theend of the fairgrounds.... rb12 ditto rb13 round barn museum... note NINTH edition of the EB. (Not the 1911, but still...) rb14 structural details of round barn roof rb15 ditto rb16 fodder (silage) cutter rb 17 ditto rb 18 ditto rb19 last view of silage.... rb20 tacrail engine rb21 --ok, look, it was a COOL washing machine. The museum guide was VERY confused by our admiring it. 22 ditto 23 ditto 24 funny sign in round barn. 25,26,27 back to that washer... 28. ok, look, the round barn is in Mannington, in Marion county, but the sign on the door, and the sign outside says "welcome to west augusta" ... apparently there USED to be some huge west augusta county that they split into several parts, one part of which became Marion -- this having been generations ago, but you know southerners, they never heard of "get over it." Also, despite the fact that the round barn was originally shingled in slate, they're repairing it with ugly asphalt shingles... Oh well.
